Nestled on the edge of the beautiful South Downs and surrounded by the rolling countryside of the National Trust's Slindon Estate, The Spur has been at the heart of local life for centuries. Our historic country pub combines traditional Sussex charm with a warm welcome, good food and a relaxed atmosphere for locals, walkers, cyclists and visitors alike.
The building itself is steeped in history. The Spur is a Grade II listed inn dating back to the 18th century, with records linking its name to nearby Dale Park and Sir George Thomas, whose estate once stood next door. Local accounts suggest that hospitality has been offered here since the 17th century, making The Spur a longstanding part of the Slindon community.
Our village of Slindon is one of Sussex's hidden gems. First recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, it has a rich history stretching back over a thousand years. The village was once closely connected to the Archbishops of Canterbury, and its landscape is filled with stories of medieval estates, ancient churches, traditional farming and even the early days of cricket.
Today, while much has changed, the spirit of The Spur remains the same. We are proud to be a family-run country pub where friends gather, families celebrate, walkers rest after exploring the Downs, and visitors experience genuine Sussex hospitality.
